OMG - a free website based on your LinkedIn profile. https://branded.me/

Interesting. Are you going to use it Jackie?
110 weeks ago, by Jackie
No, because I've already got a website and don't want to confuse people.

I can imagine recommending it to clients though. Especially the ones who brief me to write their LinkedIn profiles.

It's all about the packaging
The value of information has gone down. Just about everything can be found on Google, free, if you search long enough.

A famous information product seller puts all his data on a USB stick - but his clients don't want to pay for that. However, when he packs the USB stick in a nice branded box, they will.

Reminds me of free ebooks which typically are promoted as a vibrant looking real book.

DVD? No thanks.
I was offered a DVD recently but I have nothing to play it on. My new iMac has no DVD player. My new smart TV has no DVD player. It's a dead technology.
112 weeks ago, by James
I'm not ready for that technology to disappear, but it's inevitable. I welcomed the shift from cassette to disk but I still enjoy having something tangible in the form of the disk and case. It's also much more satisfying to give as a present. How can you give someone a piece of cloud?
112 weeks ago, by Jackie
As well as my selection of DVDs with nothing to play them on, I have a box of video tapes with nothing to play them on. I also have a box of vinyl LPs and singles but nothing to play them on.

I still have some CDs and cassette tapes. Happily, I do have something to play those on!

Unsatisfactory.
On advising someone of my new email address for their mailing list:

"You'll need to unsubscribe via the link at the bottom of the newsletter and resubscribe via the home page. "

To be honest I object to spending time unsubscribing for unsolicited mail full stop. If I haven't given permission for an email then I agree, i tend to disengage. So many large companies now think the way to hearts, minds and chequebooks is to bombard you with emails the minute after you have made a purchase. Easyjet and Southern Rail are two recents which spring to mind - I know them and I need their product only when I need it. Go away!
133 weeks ago, by James
I use Gmail and I label unsolicited mail as spam. If I don't get round to it I often find that first and second emails get through but then it automatically goes to spam, so others are doing this and Google starts to identify emails from people who aren't engaging first as spam and I don't have to see it.

If this were to be a general rule in all email platforms then people would have to keep an eye on their practices.

I'm beginning to wonder whether some unscrupulous emailers use the unsubscribe link as a way to identify 'live' email addresses they can sell to other unscrupulous emailers.

Virgin America safety video
Have we already raved about this? If not, let's do it now.

178 weeks ago, by James
That's very good for a couple of reasons:

1. It's the first aircraft safety video that I've paid attention for years.

2. It's a brilliant piece of viral marketing that is completely congruent with the Virgin brand.

Creative Cloud
Today is 20 November, and I've just received a letter (a letter!) dated 23 October from Adobe, saying their systems were compromised between 11-17 September (September!) and my name and credit card data may have been stolen.

They "regret any inconvenience or concern" and advise me to check my bank statements in case of fraud or identity theft.

Do you suppose there might have been a quicker way to alert me of this?
176 weeks ago, by Emma
That's ridiculous. Brands need to understand that everything they send out is marketing and this just makes them look incompetent.

How *not* to connect on LinkedIn
I received this LinkedIn connect request today:

"I'd like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn since my company has been in communication with yourself as regards to our marketing and database bureau services here at [Name].

Thanking you in advance of your kind consideration of this request."

I received this recently. He didn't take too kindly to my reply pointing out everything he said began with 'I' or 'We'.

I hope all is well and you can excuse my direct approach. My company Switch Communications are a managed service provider. We have been in the market for over two decades; we are expert in voice and data solutions.

Renowned for our customer care and relations we pride ourselves as being the most approachable communications provider. We recommended by Gartner to include on

I was hoping that I could find out when you will next be reviewing your communications services from your phone lines, internet, data (Servers) and hardware (Phones, caballing) as I would like to be able to contact you and be part of that process.

Our bespoke tariff report compares your current services and costs against our rates so you can have a clear outline as to where you would be saving money and in what areas.

I hope to hear from you soon,

[Do you really?]

LinkedIn is becoming increasingly spammy. Why, for example, have lots of people I don't know endorsed me for lots of skills that I don't have? Is it an indication that I should think about getting those skills, I wonder.
