Tip: update your website
Most days I'll see out of date events on websites. One easy way to check this is to search your website for specific past year dates. If you don't have a search facility then put your URL and a year date into a search engine. You may have to run the search for various years.

Passed dates are one of the main reasons why people click out of websites.

April Fools
Did you fall for any of the marketing gags that were doing the rounds? Google's turning Google Maps into a Pacman game seemed to be the main one.

It's not so easy for small companies to get on this bandwagon, it seems to be something for the big brands. The question may be whether there's actually anything to be gained from it.

Intrusive website popups
I've just been on Maplin's website (the electronics supplier) and within a second a popup appears saying 'we'd welcome your feedback'. Well give me a chance to use the site and I may be able to give you some.

Again, the business owners aren't testing their own site to feel the user experience.

"Ooh, I'm so passionate about my business!"
If I hear anyone say that again I'm going to explode. It's fast becoming as irritating as, "Have I got PPI?"

It's a weak buzzword that's been done to death over the past decade and hammered into submission on Dragons' Den.

Don't people mind using the same languaging as everyone else?

Don't business people want to be different?

Don't they all realise how 'standard' they sound?

Ok, that's off my chest, but come on, this is a subject I'm really passionate about!

This is an interesting site that shows you what's trending on Twitter at the moment. How can this be useful? Could you use it to choose the best subjects to blog about?

Misspelled domain names
Is it a good idea to buy misspelled domain names and direct them at your site?

If you have a name that is often misspelled then, yes, this is a valid strategy. However, many companies do it with misspellings of brands such as Ebay and Facebook. Is that a good idea?

The answer is categorically no. It's dishonest and frustrates users who will immediately click backwards. Google counts this as a 'bounce' and bounce rate is a key site metric.

In that case it's a very bad strategy.

No, because I've already got a website and don't want to confuse people.

I can imagine recommending it to clients though. Especially the ones who brief me to write their LinkedIn profiles.

Google Adwords
Every day I get calls from media companies who want to manage our adwords for us. The answer is 'no' every day, but the worst of it is that they just clicked on our ad to find us, so it's costing me about £3 for them to call me about something that I don't want!
